There is disclosed an apparatus and method for embedding a moisture retaining material such as peat in soil, including a hopper, a soil opener and a 5 soil-closing means. The apparatus further includes a dispensing member having an open upper end for receiving moisture-retaining material from the hopper and a generally upright channel for dispensing said moisture-retaining material, the dispensing member being located rearwardly of the soil opener such that the channel is substantially aligned with the plane of the soil opener, and the 10 following wheel being located rearwardly of the dispensing member. When the apparatus moves in a sowing direction, the soil opener opens a furrow in the soil along the sowing direction, and the dispensing member deposits moisture retaining material in the furrow.
