An electrosurgical system includes an instrument with a handle and a pair of opposing first and second jaw members (2, 3, Fig 1), each member including a sealing electrode 9/10. One or both of the electrodes are provided with at least one electrically conductive stop member 12 to maintain a predetermined spacing between the electrodes when the jaw members are closed. One or more insulating members 14 prevent the stop members from causing an electrical short between the electrodes. In a first embodiment at least one of the electrodes has a plurality of the said stop members and a generator 20 is provided which includes a controller 22 for measuring the impedance between the one or more stop members and a return electrode in order to measure a parameter of the tissue grasped between the jaws of the instrument. In a second embodiment the instrument includes a cutting member (e.g. a cutting blade/knife or electrode) which cuts any tissue grasped between the two jaw members. In a third embodiment the one or more stop members form part of a thermocouple which can indicate the temperature of any tissue grasped between the jaws. |
