A method for providing a multi-layer timed media data bit-stream from multi-layer partitioned timed media data incorporated in at least one media segment file, in a server, the multi-layer partitioned timed media data comprising timed samples, each timed sample being encoded into a first layer and at least one second layer. The at least one media segment file comprises at least one data container (e.g. MPEG2-TS PID; track in ISOBMFF), each data-container comprising at least one sample encoded into one layer, the media segment file being associated with a descriptive metadata associated with the at least one data-container. The method comprises signalling with a parameter (e.g. a flag) associated with a data-container from the descriptive metadata that a data-container is listed as being not playable (unplayable) by a user; an associated receiving method includes checking 403 a parameter associated with a data-container from the descriptor metadata, signalling the data container is non playable by a user device. Descriptive information about the organisation of layers in descriptive metadata may be inserted in an Operation Point Descriptor.
