<PICT:0577436/IV/1> Threads of molten thermoplastic material issuing from small nozzles 13 in the bottom of a container 10 are gathered into a strand and are attenuated by passage through a shallow annular air or steam jet 17 acting in the direction of travel of the threads. A slight twist may be given to the stranded threads by arranging that a swirling motion is given to the jet.
