Provided are compounds which are useful for controlling microorganisms in aqueous or water-containing systems or in systems which are exposed to moisture, including at elevated temperature. The antimicrobial compounds are of the formula I:;;wherein n, R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, and X are as defined herein.

1. A compound of formula I: wherein n is 0 or 1; R1 is linear or branched C1-C10 alkyl; R2 is H, linear or branched C1-C10 alkyl, C3-C8 cycloalkyl, or aryl; R3, R4, and R5 at each occurrence are independently H, linear or branched C1-C10 alkyl, or C3-C8 cycloalkyl;
or R2 and R3 together with the carbon to which they are attached form C3-C8 cycloalkyl;or R4 and R5 together with the carbon to which they are attached form C3-C8 cycloalkyl; and X is O or NR6, wherein R6 is linear or branched C1-C6 alkyl.
