The temperature of a sample substance is increased in a dynamically heated gravimetric chamber 1. An oxidation/reduction reactor 4 receives a flow of volatized hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon gasses from the gravimetric chamber, via a selective molecular sieve gas trap 3. The gasses output from the reactor pass to the isotope ratio spectrometer 6 via a further selective gas trap 5. The traps 3 & 5 enable selective and reversible trapping of the components of the gas flow to provide control of the gas flow fractions to thereby screen the separate fractions and determine their composition. The thermogravimetric isotopic ratio mass spectrometer apparatus may be used for analysing thermally differentiated constituents of solid and heavy liquid sources, including petroleum sources, reservoir rocks, kerogen and bitumen isolates, and drill cuttings, and in particular for determining the natural abundance of the stable isotopes eg δ13C, δ34S, δD, δ15N of these substances. |
