The invention describes a camera-based driver assistance system of a vehicle, which system detects, in particular, the stop sign, the priority road sign as well as the give way sign on the basis of its contour or its outline. The basic concept is that the system utilises the distinctive outlines of these signs in order to interpret their meaning. This has the advantage that the system does not have to detect the front side of these road signs in order to detect the meaning of these signs. By virtue of this invention, the driver assistance system of the vehicle can be active in assisting fashion, since the entire context is taken into account in the assessment of the traffic situation.
