[Also in Division H1] In a laser welding operation the intensity of the laser beam focused on to the metal workpiece is defined by the equation 3<C<9, K = thermal conductivity of metal, T b = boiling point of the metal, T 0 = original temperature of the metal, E = radiation absorptivity of the metal at the wavelength of the laser beam, a= thermal diffusivity of the metal, # = duration of the laser pulse and d = diameter of the focused laser spot. By controlling the intensity of the laser beam in accordance with the above equation holes are drilled in the metal which are allowed to fill in with molten metal before excess vaporization occurs thus resulting in a weld bead having an appreciably greater depth. The intensity of the laser beam is controlled by means of the optical pumping sources, Figs. 1, 2, 3 (not shown), Division H1, pumping the laser. |
