1,067,830. Injection moulding of luggage; laminates. S. J. HOLTZMAN. Dec. 10, 1963 [Nov. 1, 1963], No. 30887/65. Divided out of 1,067,829. Headings B5A and B5N. A method of making a concavely shaped moulded shell surfaced with textile fabric for luggage, comprises injecting a heated thermoplastic composition into a mould containing a preformed textile fabric conforming to the shape of the finished shell, the mould being maintained at a tempereture less than the injected material so that the plastic material is bonded to the surface of the fabric adjacent thereto, the exposed surface of the fabric retaining its normal texture and appearance. The thermoplastic composition may be polypropylene and the textile fabric may be cotton or other woven or knitted fabric or, preferably, woven polypropylene fibre. The fabric layer may be on one or both sides and is held in place during moulding by means of a U-shaped two-part clamp (50, 51) (Fig. 6, not shown). The clamps are received in recesses, as 48, in the two parts of the mould, the male portion A only being shown (Fig. 4) The two parts (50, 51) of the clamp C are releasably held together by spring plungers (94) (Fig. 8, not shown). Injection is effected through an opening 44, runners 46, 47, 62, 64 and gates 54, 56, 58, 60. Cooling fluid is circulated through a conduit 74. |
