A method of controlling an internal combustion engine device determines a failure that a water pump for delivering cooling water to a cooling system for cooling both the engine and an EGR system cannot be properly driven and then sets a cooling abnormality flag (F). When the value of the cooling abnormality flag (F) is 1, that is, when a cooling abnormality is present in which exhaust gas circulated in the EGR system cannot be cooled by the cooling system because of a failure of the water pump (S110), the method controls operation of the engine while limiting the opening of an EGR valve (S140-S160). By this, the engine can be more appropriately operated. Needless to say, when there is no cooling abnormality, the engine can be operated while exhaust gas is supplied to the intake side of the engine in response to an EGR execution condition being satisfied (S110-S150). |
