1398902 Production of ethanol and diethylether NATIONAL DISTILLERS & CHEMICAL CORP 1 June 1972 [1 June 1971] 25741/72 Heading C2C Ethanol and diethyl ether are produced by (1) reacting gaseous ethylene and water vapour in the presence of a hydration catalyst to obtain a gaseous reaction product containing ethanol, diethyl ether, ethylene and water vapour, (2) cooling the gaseous reaction product to condense at least a portion of the ethanol and water vapour and recovering ethanol from the condensate; (3) contacting the remaining uncondensed gases with aqueous ethanol to remove some of the diethyl ether from the gas; (4) recycling ethylene and diethyl ether in the residual gas to the hydration reaction. The preferred hydration catalyst is a supported phosphoric acid catalyst. |
