The present invention provides a method for removing oxygen from an oil sand stream (10), the method comprising at least the steps of: (a) providing an oil sand stream (10); (b) introducing the oil sand stream (10) into a liquid bath (2); (c) transporting the oil sand through the liquid bath (2) to a confined space (3) above the surface (2A) of the liquid bath (2); (d) removing the oil sand from the confined space (3); and (e) optionally extracting bitumen from the oil sand (30) removed in step (d).
