An internal combustion engine comprising: a crankcase; a cylinder; a piston guided in the cylinder and configured to perform a stroke movement and to movably define a combustion chamber; at least one transfer channel arranged in the cylinder and configured to transfer an ignition mixture from the crankcase into the combustion chamber; and at least one counter body, wherein the piston includes a lower piston edge, which interacts with the at least one counter body such that an inlet cross section of the at least one transfer channel that receives the inflow of the ignition mixture from the crankcase can be controlled by the lower piston edge during the stroke movement of the piston, and at least one of a reduction and a closing of the inlet cross section of the at least one transfer channel is effected by the interaction of the lower piston edge with the at least one counter body when the stroke movement of the piston reaches one of a bottom dead center position and an area of the bottom dead center position.
