A backlight unit for a display device and a brightness adjusting method thereof are provided to adjust brightness according to each partial area of the backlight unit by being synchronized with an image signal, thereby effectively improving a contrast ratio. A backlight unit(20) for a display device comprises a light emitting unit(21), a driving circuit(22) and a controller(23). The light emitting unit comprises plural light emitting bodies and is divided into predetermined number of partial areas. The driving circuit is connected to the light emitting unit and controls brightness of each partial area of the light emitting unit. The controller calculates a representative value for brightness control of each partial area of the light emitting unit in accordance with an inputted image signal, and outputs the representative value as a brightness control signal of each partial area to the driving circuit.
