This invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition for prevention and treatment of acquired immune deficiency syndrome comprising arsenic acid, meta-arsenite and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts. More specifically, this invention identifies that arsenic acid sodium, sodium meta-arsenite and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts, which are in vivo metabolites of As₂0₃, have anti-HIV-1 and anti-HIV-2 activities and thereby provides a pharmaceutical composition for prevention and treatment of acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
