The invention relates to an application of radio frequency identification RFID in an ear tag for animals, where the code number fitted to the tag can be read out radiographically at a distance (remotely), the ear tag being distinguished in that it is largely proof against loss, damage and fraud. Loss is counteracted by the tag being given a conical shape which makes it very difficult for it to be bitten off by an attacking animal. For this purpose, the ear tag is moreover made to lie against the ear without any space, inter alia by means of a hollow, resilient, conical head on the fastening section. Resistance of the tag against abattoir conditions (inter alia the reverberatory furnace) is achieved by a suitable selection of material or by applying a special cap. Fraud prevention is effected by the head of the fastening section being disposed irremovably within the tag, and further by the electronic code number of the ear tag being also disposed visibly, but inerasably, on the visible flange of the fastening section. Furthermore, fastening is very simple by use being made solely of the spring force of the head of the fastening section, or by this being made of metal and being retained by means of resilient lugs. Necrosis is prevented by ventilation holes being disposed in the parts suitable for this purpose. The tag can additionally be provided with a pointed, barbed pin, which allows it to be pinned to parts of a slaughtered animal or into other objects.
