<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a highly precise and efficient mass production of a patterned retardation film, for a passive-type three-dimensional image display. <P>SOLUTION: While a base material 40 of a roll plate 20 is rotated so that the roll plate 20 forms a rugged shape on an alignment film, a rubbing roll 52 being tilted and rotated is moved and pushed onto the base material 40.
