PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide arbutin-containing compositions which substantially maintain white color when time elapses.SOLUTION: Arbutin-containing compositions which contain preservatives, chelating agents, humectants, emulsifying agents, pH adjusters, and reducing agents, and contain 0.1-15 mass% of arbutin represented by the following formula are useful for topical application to provide enhanced luminosity, brightening or lightening to the skin of a user, and further are at least 85% as efficacious (with regard to skin lightening, when used alone or in a system as measured by Chromameter(R) b* parameter values) as substantially corresponding compositions containing hydroquinone in the amount from about the same molar amount to about 1.5 times the molar amount of arbutin. |
