An image recording apparatus, comprising: a recording head controller to transfer image data and a driving waveform to a recording head in conjunction with position information of the recording head, the recording head controller including, a driving waveform storage unit to store driving waveform data, the driving waveform data including at least first driving waveform data having an associated first driving pulse and second driving waveform data having an associated second driving pulse, the first driving pulse and the second driving pulse each having rise and fall times associated therewith, one or more of the rise time and fall time being shorter in the second driving pulse than in the first driving pulse;a calculator to calculate a number of nozzles driven simultaneously from the image data; anda driving waveform selector to select one driving waveform data from the multiple driving waveform data based on the calculated number of driven nozzles and a threshold value of the number of driven nozzles such that if the calculated number of driven nozzles is greater than or equal to the threshold value the driving waveform selector is configured to drive the recording head using the second driving waveform data.
