PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device which includes an electrodeposition element and can control the wavelength of light passing through the electrodeposition element.SOLUTION: An optical device comprises: first and second substrates arranged so as to be opposed to each other, the first substrate including a first electrode provided on the surface close to the second substrate, and the second substrate including a second electrode provided on the surface close to the first substrate; and an electrolyte layer held between the first and second substrates and including electrodeposition material containing silver. When a potential of the first electrode is used as reference, a first potential being a positive potential is applied to the second electrode in a first period, and a second potential being a positive potential and lower than the first potential is applied to the second electrode in a second period after the first period.
