[Class 103 (iv).] Freight containers for use on railroad cars comprise a boxlike container adapted normally to rest on its base, rolling supports for the container and connecting means between said supports and the container including devices for lowering and raising the container with respect to its rolling supports. The con. tainers are preferably of a length substantially equal to the width of a rail waggon and comprises sides 2 of wood with metal coverings, the base or bottom being preferably of plywood while angle-irons 4, 5 reinforce the base and 6 connect the sides together. Housings 7 are provided at each corner for wheels or rollers 1 carried by yokes 11 and adapted to project from the housing to enable the container to be moved or to be retracted into the housing to allow the container to rest solidly on its base. The yokes 11 are provided with screwed spindles 13 passing through nut wheels 16 adapted to be rotated through a bevel wheel 18 and shaft 17 by a crank &c. In another form the roller may be carried by a piston operated by compressed air in a cylinder forming the housing. Two or more of the rollers may be operated simultaneously. |
