[Class 41] In apparatus for the electrolysis of saline solutions the cathode consists of mercury which is caused to overflow from a trough r over the entire upper edge u of a smooth metal vertical guide surface t of such configuration as to prevent break-up of the vertically flowing mercury sheet by the effect of surface tension with consequent exposure of the guide surface and generation of hydrogen. The guide surface may be of closed contours, for example two parallel sheets joined by hemicylindrical ends ; when of unclosed formation, as shown, its width should diminish downwardly. Electric connection to the member t may be made by a metal rod s extending through an insulating wall k. The guide surface, if of iron, may be coated with a metal soluble in mercury.</p> |
