A medical instrument lockout comprises a slidable linkage having a first link and a second link, and a first fixed pivot and a second fixed pivot. The second link is pivotable about the second fixed pivot to pivot the first link about the first fixed pivot. Pivoting of the second link about the second fixed pivot may disengage the first link from an extendable member. A spring may be positioned to bias the first link against the extendable member to lock the instrument. The spring may be deflected by the first link when the second link pivots about the second fixed pivot to disengage the lock.
