Disclosed are a system and a method for operating a tail gate. A tail gate operating system according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a smart key recognition unit for recognizing a smart key of a user positioned within a predetermined region from a vehicle; a face recognition sensor for automatically recognizing face information through a face image of a person photographed by a camera module, and comparing a feature of the recognized face information and the face information of the user registered in advance, to certify the registered user; a gate driving unit for opening or closing the tail gate by a driving member according to an applied control signal; and a control unit for controlling an opening or closing operation of the gate driving unit if the user certification is successful in the recognition of the face recognition sensor.
