A write pole structure disclosed herein includes a write pole layer, a bottom layer including a beveled surface, and a cap layer between the write pole layer and the bottom layer, wherein the cap layer is made of a material with hardness less than hardness of the write pole layer.

1. A recording head comprising: a bottom layer extending from a front end of the head at an air bearing surface to a far end, the bottom laver with a beveled surface, the bottom layer having a front end thickness and a far end thickness different than the front end thickness;
a cap layer, made of a material with a hardness less than a hardness of a write pole layer, on and in contact with the beveled surface of the bottom layer, the cap layer extending from the front end towards, but not to, the far end; and the write pole layer deposited on the cap layer, the write pole layer extending from the front end to the far end.
