PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal alignment layer having a successful and stable aligning ability, a liquid crystal display element which makes the liquid crystal alignment layer components, and a method for manufacturing the liquid crystal alignment layer. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the liquid crystal alignment layer includes the following steps: (1) a pretreatment step of a substrate; (2) a step of applying an optical alignment layer on the substrate; (3) a step of irradiating the optical alignment layer with light to give an optical alignment function; (4) a step of arranging an auxiliary layer which consists of crosslinkable materials and to which an alignment function is given by the optical alignment layer; and (5) a crosslinking step of the crosslinkable materials. The liquid crystal alignment layer is manufactured by the method for manufacturing the liquid crystal alignment layer, and the liquid crystal display element makes the liquid crystal alignment layer components.
