<p>A tympanostomy tube (200) for insertion into and residence in a tympanic membrane of a mammal, is disclosed. The tympanostomy tube (200) includes a body including a first end portion (202), a second end portion (204), a central portion (206) disposed between the first (202) and second (204) end portions. An axially extending passageway (218) has a first open end (220) disposed adjacent the first end portion (202), and a second open end (222) disposed adjacent the second end portion (206), and an axis extending between the first open end (220) and second (222) open end. The first end portion (202) Includes a relatively enlarged diameter, generally radially extending flange (226). The central portion (206) includes a reduced diameter portion sized for extending through and residing in tissue of the tympanic membrane. The second end portion (204) includes a relatively enlarged diameter second flange (238) disposed adjacent the second end portion (204). The second flange (238) includes a perimetral edge (260) having an incising portion (262) sufficiently sharpened to cut as a knife through the tympanic membrane during insertion of the tympanostomy tube (200) in the tympanic membrane.</p> |
