[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Feb. 3, 1948.] [Classes 7(ii) and 7(vi)] The combustion chamber is divided into a main combustion chamber C<SP>1</SP> provided with ignition means D and an'auxiliary chamber C<SP>2</SP> communicating with the main chamber, and carburetted air is introduced in the course of the suction stroke through the auxiliary chamber into the engine cylinder the carburetted air being thus led indirectly into the main chamber and after the end of the suction stroke and during at least part of the compression stroke water or a liquid hydrated fuel is injected into the auxiliary chamber through the nozzle I with the result that it is retained by the compression pressure and that the carburetted mixture in the main chamber is free from any aqueous liquid so that as the mixture is ignited in the main chamber the combustion will begin in the main chamber that contains carburetted air and is completed in the auxiliary chamber that contains a mixture of carburetted air with water. The amount of water injected into the auxiliary chamber is adjustable so that the percentage of carburetted mixture forced into the main chamber during the compression stroke is made dependent on the amount of water injected which makes it possible to control the pressure obtained at the end of the compression stroke. Injection may be continued during the combustion period. Preferably the injector is aligned with the longitudinal axis of the auxiliary chamber. In a modification the chambers C', C<SP>2</SP> are separated by a projection on the cylinder head instead of by a projection B on the piston as shown. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, states also that the auxiliarv chamber is preferably cylindrical, injection taking place along the axis of the chamber and communication with the main chamber being established at the end of the auxiliary chamber remote from an iniector for the water. The moment at which injection commences is variable in accordance with the load and/or speed of the engine. A continuous flow to the auxiliary chamber takes place during the whole of the injection period. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
