PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer provided with a blanket surface that provides a high energy surface for image formation and then reduces the surface energy for image transfer.SOLUTION: An aqueous inkjet printer is provided with a surface energy applicator 120 that is positioned to treat a surface of a blanket 21 immediately prior to a printhead ejecting ink onto the blanket. Modifying the surface energy of the blanket with the electric field and excited particles produced by the applicator affects the adhesion of the ink to the blanket. This adhesion changes because of the impact of the ink on the blanket until the ink image is transferred to media. The surface energy applicator is operated during each print cycle to alter the surface energy of the blanket for each ink image formed on the blanket.
