A separator cartridge 10 of the outside-in flow type for freeing a hydrocarbon liquid from water comprises a pervious cylindrical wall 11, closed by end plates 12, 13, around which is wrapped a sheet of separator paper 17 provided with shallow rounded puckers 18 such that the surface area is increased as compared with a sheet of unpuckered paper. The ends of the paper are sealed at 19 and sealed at 20 to the end plates. The puckers may be formed by feeding damp paper between two rollers one of which is rubber while the other is formed with steel teeth. The increase in surface area is preferably 100% and preferably not less than 50%. The end plate 13 is provided with a connection 14 for mounting the cartridge and forms an outlet for the hydrocarbon liquid. The paper is preferably treated with phenol formaldehyde, The liquid to be treated is passed through at least one coalescer cartridge prior to the separator cartridge.
