854,754. Tuning resonant lines. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 10, 1957 [April 13, 1956], No. 11742/57. Class 40(8). [Also in Group XL(a)] An electron discharge device, preferably a velocity modulation tube in which the beam is subjected to multiple to and fro reflections, has means for producing rectilinear movement of a tuning element within the envelope comprising a lever pivoted at a point outside the envelope and extending through flexible bellows 18, and an annulus 13 and coupling member 12 in the linkage, the annulus 13 having a first arcuate rigid section 14 connected to the lever and a second arcuate flexible section 15 which is flexible perpendicular to the axis of the annulus and rigid in the tangential direction. The tuning member 7 preferably moves parallel to a tangent to the circular arc traced out by the end of control rod 16, and so alters the frequency of lecher line 4. The rod 7 has resilient contact strips at each end which slide along slits in the wall of box anode 3. Tuning rod 7 is connected by rod 10 to two quartz tubes 6 which slide over rods 11 not shown fixed to the anode 3 and are connected to bifurcated member 12 welded to ring 13. The ring 13 is connected to flexible bellows 18 by plug 17, 15 being a flexible half and 14 the rigid half of the annular ring 13. If flexible part 15 is made smaller than rigid part 14 the quartz tubes 6 are unnecessary since, it is stated, the bifurcated member 12 in this case moves rectilinearly. |
