A tufted carpet having a porous cellular underlayer is produced by spreading the base of the tufted carpet with a mixture of a foamable polyvinyl chloride paste, the carpet is subjected to conditions under which foaming of the mixture occurs, and is treated to set the resulting foamed resin material, so that when the latter is set the carpet is provided with a firmly adherent layer having a porous cellular structure. The paste may consist essentially of polyvinyl chloride and a foaming agent, and the coated carpet is heated in order to cause the foaming agent to expand the solidifying polyvinyl chloride.</p> |
