PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably extract connected components from inputted color images and multivalued images. SOLUTION: This connected component extraction apparatus comprises an edge extraction part 102 extracting edges from the color images inputted from an image input part 101, a run extraction part 103 extracting runs for those pixels other than the edges from the inputted color images, a run connection determination part 104 determining the presence or absence of the connection of the runs by the positional relation among the runs extracted by the run extraction part 103 and color differences, and a connected component output part 105 extracting, as connected components, the assembly of the runs determined to be connected by the run connection determination part 104. The connected components are extracted directly from the color images and multivalued images by determining the integration of the runs sequentially while the states of the colors and densities of the inputted color images and multivalued images are confirmed from the inputted color images and multivalued images.
