The invention comprises carbamic acid esters of the general formula [I] in which R1 and R2 are the same or different and are C1-C4 alkyl radicals. The new compounds may be made by reacting a phenol of formula [II] with (a) methyl isocyanate preferably in the presence of an inert solvent and a tertiary amine at 0-130 DEG C.; (b) an excess of phosgene in the presence of a base to give the corresponding chloroformic acid ester which is then reacted with methylamine; and (c) an approximately equivalent amount of phosgene to give the corresponding bis-phenyl carbonate which is then reacted with methylamine. The phenols used as starting materials may be obtained by reacting 1-alkoxy-2-alkyl-benzenes with acetic anhydride in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst and an inert solvent, and reacting the 4-acylated-1-alkoxy-2-alkyl benzenes thus obtained with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of acetic anhydride.ALSO:Pesticidal compositions comprise a compound of formula, in which R1 and R2 are C1-C4 alkyl groups, in admixture with a solid or liquid diluent or carrier.
