The method involves determining steering wheel angle as measure for desired wheel steering angle (deltafm) for steerable wheels (5a, 5b). A measuring circuit for measuring phase current at phase windings of an electric motor (9) i.e. permanently excited synchronous motor, is provided in an output stage driver circuit. Modified voltage for controlling electronic switches i.e. FETs, of an inverter is generated from onboard network voltage by a boost converter. The converter is deactivated within defined time period during determination of the phase current by the circuit. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program with a program code medium for executing a method for operating an electronic power steering system (2) an electronic power steering system of a motor vehicle.
