<p>A display device with a higher contrast ratio is provided. The display device comprises a luquid crystal element (100) sandwiched between a first substrate (101) and a second substrate (102), and is provided with stacked a pair of polarizing plates (103,104) arranged with the transmission axes (A,B) displaced from a parallel Nicols state. Moreover, the display device can comprise more than one pair of polarizing plates and at least one pair of stacked polarizing plates is displaced from a parallel Nicols state. The pair of stacked polarizing plates is arranged in a cross Nicols state. A retardation plate may be provided between the pair of polarizing plates (103,104) and the liquid crystal element (100). As a result, the contrast ratio can be increased.</p> |
