PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emitting element which can efficiently distribute light emitted from an active layer in a light emission direction and has excellent light extraction efficiency, and to provide a method for manufacturing the same.SOLUTION: A light emitting element 10 includes: a support substrate 31; a first electrode 23 provided on the support substrate 31; a semiconductor structure layer which is a semiconductor structure layer having a first semiconductor layer 17 of a first conductivity type, an active layer 15 and a second semiconductor layer 13 of a second conductivity type formed on the first electrode 23 in order from the surface of the first electrode 23, and has a recessed portion 19 that is formed from the surface of the semiconductor structure layer to the second semiconductor layer 13 and exposes the second semiconductor layer 13 on its bottom face; and a second electrode 21 provided on the bottom face of the recessed portion 19. The side face of the second semiconductor layer 13 facing the recessed portion 19 is separated from the second electrode 21, and has an inverse tapered shape spreading toward a light emission direction. |
