PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a columnar aluminum titanate, capable of providing a sintered compact low in the thermal expansion coefficient, large in the pore diameter, and high in the mechanical strength, and a sintered compact of the columnar aluminum titanate.SOLUTION: A method for manufacturing a columnar aluminum titanate having an average aspect ratio (=number-average major diameter/number-average minor diameter) of ≥1.5 and a magnesium content in terms of oxide of 0.5 to 2.0 wt.% with respect to the total of titanium and aluminum includes a step of mechanochemically mixing a raw material containing a titanium source, an aluminum source and a magnesium source under pulverization, and a firing the pulverized mixture at a temperature of 1,300 to 1,600°C. A silicon source is further contained in the raw material in the range of 0.5 to 10 wt.% in terms of oxide with respect to the total of the titanium source and the aluminum source. |
