PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical element and an image display apparatus for providing a high quality display.SOLUTION: There is provided a liquid crystal optical element which comprises: a first substrate part; a second substrate part; and a liquid crystal layer. The first substrate part includes a first substrate having a first principal surface and a plurality of first electrodes. The plurality of first electrodes are provided on the first principal surface to extend in a first direction and arranged in a direction crossing the first direction. The second substrate part includes a second substrate and a counter electrode. The second substrate has a second principal surface opposite to the first principal surface. The counter electrode is provided on the second principal surface. The liquid crystal layer is provided between the first substrate part and the second substrate part. One side surface of two side surfaces which extend in the first direction of the first electrodes and have a surface not parallel to the first principal surface has at least one of a projection part and a retreat part.
