A tensioner (10, 70, 110) for tensioning a belt includes a support housing (12, 84, 130) at least in part defining a spring cavity (16). A damping member (24, 72, 112) having a first friction bearing surface (56; 96, 98; 164, 166) is at least partially disposed in the spring cavity (16). An arm (14) pivotably attached to the support housing (12, 84, 130) has a second friction bearing surface (58, 114). A spring (18, 118) is located in the spring cavity (16) and operatively connected to the arm (14) and damping member (24, 72, 112) to pivot the damping member about a pivot location such that the first friction bearing surface (56; 96, 98; 164, 166) of the damping member (24, 72, 112) is biased against the second friction bearing surface (58, 114) of the arm (14) to dampen relative movement between the arm and the support housing (12, 84, 130).
|
