The device has a magnetic field source fixed on the moving element (6), and two magneto-sensitive sensors (1,2), which are spaced apart from the magnetic field source lying in a plane spatially offset in the direction of movement. The relatively moving element is rotatably mounted, where the plane is arranged normal to a rotational axis (14). The magneto-sensitive sensors detect the axial component of the magnetic field. The absolute rotational position is recognized over an angular range of 360 degree. An independent claim is included for a method for determining absolute position of an element rotatable relative to two magneto-sensitive sensors.
