<p>PURPOSE: A device and a method for capturing static images when taking or playing a video are provided to capture desired static images without input predetermined control signals in the middle of taking or playing the video. CONSTITUTION: A digital photographing device sets static image capture conditions according to a user input (S302). When taking a video is started, the device determines whether video data inputted while taking the video satisfies the static image capture conditions or not (S304, S306). If the inputted video data satisfies the static image capture conditions, the device captures the static images (S308). The device performs the capturing operation until the end of a video taking process (S310).
