The invention relates to a method and a washing system (1) for cleaning track ballast (2) by spraying the same with water that is fed to a wastewater treatment plant (6) for reutilization. According to the invention, the ballast is sprayed at a high pressure exceeding 100 bar using water nozzles (17) which rotate in a washing drum (16) in a first cleaning process. The ballast (2) is then fed to a conveying device (7) comprising water passage holes and is sprayed at a low pressure on said conveying device (7) in a second cleaning process.
