[Also in Division B7] In an automotive vehicle transfer box 10 following a conventional change speed gear 14 and providing high or low gear rear, or high or low gear rear and front wheel drive, the positions of rear and front drive shift rods 92, 88 are indicated by electric lights 112, 122 respectively " on " in neutral and four-wheel drive. An externally gear-toothed clutch member 44 splined on a rear drive output shaft 28 is shiftable, by a fork 48 on the shift rod 92, into three positions, viz.: leftward, in which it engages clutch teeth 32 on an input gear 22 fast on an output shaft 16 of the conventional change speed gear 14 for direct (high) drive to the rear wheels; neutral; and rightward, in which it engages the step 58 of a stepped gear 56, 58 free on a lay shaft 52 for reduced drive to the rear wheels through the gears 22, 56, 58, 44. An externally gear-toothed clutch member 80 on a front drive output shaft 60 is shiftable, by a fork 86 on the shift rod 88 into three positions, viz.: leftward, in which it engages clutch teeth 74 on a gear 72 meshing the gear 56 for high drive to the front wheels through the gears 22, 56, 72; neutral; and rightward, in which it engages the gear 58 for reduced drive to the front wheels through the gears 22, 56, 58, 80. The rear and front drive output shafts 28, 60 have fast thereon propeller shaft universal joint yokes 40, 68. The shift rods are actuated by linkages (not shown) engaging transverse holes 90N, 94H in the rods 88, 92 respectively. Interlock plungers 98, 100 sliding in the casing are engageable with slots 96, 101, 102 in the rods 88, 92 to ensure front wheel drive only with rear wheel drive and to prevent drive to the front and rear wheels at different ratios. In Fig. 3, switches 108, 114 comprise plungers outwardly biased to engage the shift rods 92, 88 respectively. In the neutral position of the rear drive shift rod 92, switch 108 is closed and the light 112 is " on," and in the high and low gear positions of the said rod slots 104, 106 accommodate the plunger to allow the switch 108 to open and the light 112 is " off." In the high and low gear positions of the front drive shift rod 88 slots 118, 120 accommodate the plunger of the switch 114 to allow said switch to close and the light 122 is " on," and in the neutral position of said rod the switch is open and the light 122 is " off."
