PURPOSE: A method for controlling the mechanism of lipid and carotenoid metabolism by manipulating MAP kinase signal transduction is provided to identify a MAP kinase signal transduction system. CONSTITUTION: A method for controlling the mechanism of lipid and carotenoid metabolism by manipulating MAP kinase signal transduction of microalgae comprises a step of suppressing the MAP kinase signal transduction of microalgae selected between Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Chlorella vulgaris using MEK inhibitor U0126 and simultaneously enhancing biosynthesis of lipid and carotenoid. A method for reducing biosynthesis of astaxanthin comprises a step of suppressing the MAP kinase signal transduction of Haematococcus pluvialis using MEK inhibitor U0126.
