An interlocked pair of counterweight blocks (100) includes a first and a second counterweight block (100) each having two lifting lugs (104) at two opposing sides of the counterweight block (100), wherein a vertical plane drawn through a center of gravity (108) of the counterweight block (100) intersects both lifting lugs (104) such that the counterweight block (100) can be lifted at only the two lifting lugs (104); wherein each of the first and second counterweight blocks (100) include interlocking pieces (112) in a side other than the two opposing sides for interconnecting the first and second counterweight blocks (100) side by side such that the interlocked combination of the first and second counterweight blocks (100) can be lifted by the four lifting lugs (104). A method of stacking the interlocked pair of counterweight blocks (100) includes lifting the interconnected first and second counterweight blocks (100) at the four lifting lugs (104); and setting the interconnected first and second counterweight blocks (100) at a stacking location, and repeating the process.
