PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that the diagnostic accuracy deteriorates in failure diagnosis of a suction valve of a high-pressure fuel pump when the fuel pressure is momentarily lower than the target fuel pressure due to a fuel-pressure pulsation amplitude and noise or the like in an output signal of a fuel pressure sensor or when a response delay until the fuel pressure changes (drops) occurs.

SOLUTION: The failure diagnosis of a suction valve of a high-pressure fuel pump is performed on the basis of the elapsed time for establishing the determination to allow execution of the failure diagnosis and a failure diagnostic threshold calculated based on the engine state.
