<PICT:0590986/IV/1> Washing, bleaching, dyeing, waterproofing, and drying of textile materials are effected by circulating the appropriate temperature-controlled reagent parallel to the planes of the textiles stacked in a hermetically-sealed chamber, causing different parts of the peripheries of the textiles to be presented to the flow of reagent, and subjecting the textiles to continuous flexure in a direction transverse to the reagent flow. The reagent passes from a header tank 24, supplied from mixing and water tanks, to a chamber 21 in which the textiles are arranged horizontally on a resilient bed 72 in a perforated basket 70 which is rotated by a motor 77. The cover 56 of the chamber is operated by a motor 59 and a motor-driven movable wall 61 incorporates reciprocating rams 65. Reagent is circulated through the chamber by a reversible pump 81 via lines 52 and 54, or 84 and 85, and the pressure in the chamber is controlled by reducing and safety valves. A drain from the bottom of the chamber may lead to a filter and a fat separator. The line 106 may be connected to an air pump for supplying compressed air to the chamber or for creating a vacuum therein. Quantity meters, pH indicators, thermometers, and pressure indicators in the tanks and chambers, and flow-meters and thermostatically-controlled heaters in the pipe lines may be connected electrically to a control panel, and the valves, pumps, and motors may be automatically operated in a predetermined sequence. In modifications of the apparatus (Figs. 5-9, not shown), (1) the rams are in the sides of the chamber, with the textiles stacked vertically, and a vertical flow of reagent; (2) a cam disc, associated with the rotating mechanism for the basket, reciprocates a platen under the resilient bed, and annular cams on the cover of the chamber operate the rams.
