A method of adjusting a power saving mode of user equipment operating in a wireless communication network, a computer program product and base station operable to perform that method. The power saving mode comprises a discontinuous reception and/or transmission mode according to which user equipment periodically switches, according to a first predetermined scheme, between a first state in which data packets may be communicated between the user equipment and the network and a second state in which data packets cannot be communicated between the user equipment and the network. The method comprises: determining that there is data traffic to be communicated between the user equipment and the network; assessing whether the data traffic can be communicated within the first predetermined scheme in accordance with at least one predetermined efficiency target; and if not: adjusting at least one operational parameter of the first predetermined scheme to move communication of the data traffic between the user equipment and the network towards the at least one predetermined efficiency target. Accordingly, a flexible discontinuous communication scheme may enhance power saving performance for smartphones, thus offering better operator service and better customer experience. |
