The device i.e. fuel pump (100) has an inlet (105) for receiving a fluid, and outlet (175) for ejecting the fluid, and a pumping element (140) for conveying the fluid from the inlet to the outlet. A volume valve (125) controls flow of the fluid from the inlet to the pumping element based on pressure prevailing in a region of the outlet, where the volume valve is controlled hydraulically. The volume valve increases the flow of fluid from the inlet to the pumping element when the pressure in the outlet region falls below a predetermined threshold.
